Diablo Flies to Alaska

Last week the remains of four people – including two little girls ages six and three – were found in Kenai, Alaska, in what appears to be a murder suicide. Click here for the horrific details. Ironically, the deceased children’s grandmother lives in Smyrna, TN, and a few months ago Lisa adopted a ten-pound lame mutt from ICHBA named Diablo.

When Lisa found out the grim fate of her two grandchildren, she called Donna – ICHBA’s head honcho – asking if anyone in our network could dog-sit for Diablo while she flew back to Alaska for the memorial services. She calls Diablo her “saving grace.”

Recognizing the power dogs have to heal grief, Donna paid for Diablo’s plane ticket to Alaska so he could be with Lisa through the next several weeks.

I’m sharing this story for two reasons. One, I want to point out how proud I am to volunteer for an organization like ICHBA. Ultimately, the core reason we care about dogs so much is because of their rare power to love without questions or qualifications. Rescuing dogs isn’t only about saving their lives; it’s also about sharing their unconditional love.

Secondly, Miss Flip-Phone Donna Wilkins has started an Internet campaign at gofundme.com to raise money to pay for Diablo’s ticket home. (Charlotte – are you reading this!!!!!) If you have a few dollars, help get Diablo home. Here’s the link:
