Rosie Returns Update 1

Rosie is a fence jumper. We’ve never had one before.

It all started last week, when her partner-in-crime, our four-month-old puppy Adriana, got spayed and needed to be as still as possible for several days, which meant no playing. Rosie is a couple months older than Adriana and outweighs her by forty pounds, but they are inseparable, roughhousing from first light until dusk.

After they repeatedly refused to rest, I had to separate them, keeping Rosie locked downstairs in the basement, where she had access to the backyard, a couch, and a huge bowl of water, while Adriana stayed in the living room with a turkey-wrapped raw hide.

The problem is that Rosie grew bored and found an inventive way to amuse herself, jumping the four-foot high fence and exploring the surrounding woods. Once she tasted freedom, she enjoyed it so much that now she breaks out several times a day.

She never runs far, just scopes the perimeter, always heading towards the trails behind the house before we bust her. As soon as Mason or I realize she’s hopped the fence, we call her, and she barrels through the front door, wearing a ridiculously delighted expression. We might have to yell for her twice, but never more. Thankfully, Rosie respects us.

Although I admire Rosie’s adventurous spirit, we live too close to the road for comfort, so her break-out’s are a problem we’re going to have to fix before we leave for our second to last NHRA Drag Race in Las Vegas this weekend.
