Danita pulling the five healthiest pups
Bernice, a Smith Street resident, relocating the weaker pups to her shed
This afternoon we pulled the five biggest pups from Dawn’s second litter. Danita took them home to foster until they’re adopted. Danita is a twenty-something animal activist with a rock-n-roll edge and a trove of dog knowledge. ICHBA often works with her family, who have their own version of a “Farnival.”
We moved the weaker pups to a shed, covered the floor with straw and blankets, filled up Dawn’s food and water bowl. Now, we wait.
We have four hours.
If Dawn, a feral dog that’s had 19 puppies in six months, doesn’t feed her moved litter by this evening, we’ll mix up a milk and egg concoction, start feeding them, and hope they live. If she’s still rejecting them by morning, we’ll have to pull the entire litter. Of the six left, there were two boys and four girls.
Our hope is that she makes the shed her den and when she’s sleeping or feeding her puppies, we can shut the door and trap her inside.
